Choosing your colors. Whoever does your tattoos should select the colors with your input. Review color samples together to decide which combination would best match your skin tone. After unilateral mastectomy, you can match the color to your natural nipple. If you have bilateral reconstruction, some professionals recommend matching the natural color of your lips. Or bring a pre-op photo of your natural breasts as a reference. Blending two or more shades of beige, brown, tan, or pink sometimes produces the most natural result. Choose a hue that is somewhat darker than your final color—nipple tattoos fade as much as 40 to 50 percent. You might need two or three sessions to apply the full color; layering pigment can help your tattoo last longer.
